THE DALLES COMMUNITY COVENANT
WE, the people of the The Dalles area, recognize and affirm that certain essential values derive from our nature and relationships as human beings. Among those values we identify the following as basic to the well-being and happiness of both the individual and the community:
Respect for every person as a creature of God, "endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable rights".
Respect for the physical creation, including our environment, our bodies, and the bodies of others, our possessions and the possessions of others.
Adherence to the universal moral principles that are founded in our nature and relationships as moral beings.
Respect for all forms of authority and government that are necessary for the good of each and of all.
THEREFORE, we the people of the The Dalles area covenant together to honor and support one another regardless of race, religion, or social standing, and pledge support for and cooperation among the institutions of our community in their mutual endeavors for the common good, including our families, our schools, our churches, and all other components of community life.
WE WILL, therefore, assume the following courses of action:
Adhere to honesty and integrity in personal and financial relationships;
Endeavor by all available means to rid our community of all illegal drugs and reduce the availability of alcohol and tobacco to our minor children;
Revere and uphold the spiritual life and institutions of our community, while respecting the rights of all.
Strengthen our families including faithfulness in our marriage and family commitments and by encouraging our children to practice premarital sexual abstinence;
Promote understanding and build relationships among the generations by honoring the elderly, friendliness toward the young, and respect by the young among themselves and toward adults;
Encourage our children and young people to develop their potential and to achieve excellence in their endeavors by setting an example of excellence in our own lives and endeavors;
Work together to help the poor and less-privileged of our community to prosper and become self-sufficient.
